Applied Computing Applies Online Education

The best part of online learning is that it need not be used in its entirety. It can be targeted to fulfill one part of the requirements of or augment any particular course or program.

The University of Dundee in Scotland is using an online class to compensate for its students’ shortcomings in object-oriented programming. The institution allows learners who are sufficiently qualified a direct, lateral entry into the second year of its four-year Applied Computing degree program. The online supplement has been set up for these students who sometimes find themselves lacking the necessary object-oriented programming skills needed to keep pace with the coursework.

Java Online is being offered through WiredRed’s e/pop web conferencing solution as a weekly, hour-long option either during college or during the vacation just before joining university. The class incorporates audio, video, instant messaging, interactive whiteboard and document, application and desktop sharing to develop lessons and tutorials that parallel those being taught to first year students of the Computing course.
